Hence, prisons are a good litmus test for society \u2013 this is the idea that was expressed by Law Institute of Lithuania (LIL) research fellow Gintautas Sakalauskas at \u201cEnsuring Human Rights for Vulnerable Groups\u201d, a scientific conference held in Kaunas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In discussing human rights protection for persons detained in penal institutions, Dr Sakalauskas provided certain examples which testify to the indifference to persons in prison, the well-established stereotypes about punishment and its impact, as well as the arbitrariness of journalists in writing about incarcerated persons and the institutional alienation where the official position of the institutions and the criteria for assessing their performance do not correspond to reality. Dr Sakalauskas provided data showing that almost 70 per cent of convicts feel depressed and lonely, and often experience stress. Approximately half of the people who find themselves in detention facilities feel like they couldn\u2019t survive more than a day there, and one-fifth no longer see a reason to live. Nearly 80 per cent of imprisoned people have been faced with no one being interested in their personal situation and no one talking with them about the execution of their sentence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the researcher, only the efforts of lone individuals have an impact on ensuring the protection of human rights in a situation like this, but this is not sufficient, and running away from poor leadership, systemic nonsense and low-paid work is a good illustration for the entire problem of emigration from Lithuania.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">LIL research fellow Dr R\u016bta Vai\u010di\u016bnien\u0117 drew attention to gender inequality in the prison system. In Lithuania, men and women carry out their sentences separately. The researcher says that Lithuanian imprisonment institutions can be considered segregated and isolated from a gender perspective if we compare them, for example, with the Scandinavian countries, which are distinguished for having the most progressive imprisonment systems and the lowest rates of recidivism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dr Johanas Baltrimas from the LIL discussed the spelling of non-Lithuanian surnames in personal documents through the prism of human rights protection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the conference, researchers from Vytautas Magnus University also analysed various topics related to ensuring human rights for vulnerable groups.
