4 EU TRAINING SESSIONS ON FAMILY LAW REGULATIONS FOR CROSS-BORDER LAWYERS AND SOCIAL SERVICES (C.L.A.S.S.4EU)

From 2018 to 2019 the Law Institute of Lithuania (hereinafter – LIL, Institute) together with the partners from Italy, Hungary and Portugal implemented an EU co-funded project “4 EU Training Sessions on Family Law Regulations for Cross-border Lawyers and Social Services” (C.L.A.S.S.4EU). During the Project, practice-oriented trainings for lawyers and social service staff from four participating countries were provided. The trainings were developed in order to increase the aforementioned professionals’ knowledge in the area of international family law.

Respectively, taking into account the fact that the migration in the EU is rapidly growing and the number of family cases with international element increases, the project “C.L.A.S.S.4EU” aimed to advance the knowledge of lawyers and social service staff about the Regulation Brussels IIa (Regulation 2201/2003) as well as other EU regulations and international conventions on family law. The acquired knowledge was expected to lead to enhancement of lawyers’ and social service staff competence and to better protection of children and other vulnerable persons.

The training course for lawyers and social service workers along with the comprehensive supporting training material developed within the context of the project “C.L.A.S.S.4EU” explained how the Regulation Brussels IIa should be interpreted and applied in complex family law cases. Moreover a “Glossary of legal terminology” has been drafted. Training courses were arranged in the following cities: Braga (Portugal), Budapest (Hungary), Milan (Italy) and Vilnius (Lithuania). Overall the training was introduced to 300 lawyers and social service workers.

Participation in the “C.L.A.S.S.4EU” Project can be considered as continuation of extensive LIL research conducted in the sphere of international family law. Thus, in 2015–2017 Law Institute of Lithuania took part in another EU co-funded project “ES teisėjų mokymai dėl IIa Briuselio reglamento: nuo Pietų iki Rytų” and organised judiciary trainings on proper application of the Regulation Brussels IIa.

The “C.L.A.S.S.4EU” Project was implemented together with the other partners: University of Verona (Italy), University of Milano Bicocca (Italy), University of Minho (Portugal), Eötvös Loránd University (Hungary).

The project was co-funded by the Justice programme of the European Commission (No. JUST-JTRA-EJTR-AG-2016-763874).

Project duration: 01 January 2018 – 31 December 2019.
