PROCEDURAL SAFEGUARDS OF ACCUSED OR SUSPECTED CHILDREN: IMPROVING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE RIGHT TO INDIVIDUAL ASSESSMENT (IA-CHILD)
On 1 January 2019, the Lithuanian Law Institute (LIL) as the main project coordinator, together with partners from Croatia, Greece, Cyprus, Belgium and Lithuania, started to implement the European Union (EU) funded project “ Procedural safeguards of accused or suspected children: improving the implementation of the right to individual assessment” (IA-CHILD).
The Project aims at exploring the legal regulation and practice regarding the individual assessment of suspected or accused children in criminal procedure (IA) in four EU (project partner) countries and seeks to contribute to a more effective implementation of Directive (EU) 2016/800. Project activity includes a detailed analysis of the current situation regarding individual assessment, identifying best practices and key challenges in individually assessing suspected or accused children.

This project will help share experiences, deepen knowledge, and broaden perspectives on various aspects of the individual assessment process. At the end of the project partners will be able to propose to the national legislators and European Commission justified ways of improving the implementation of the Article 7 of the Directive.
The results of the project will be presented through virtual format: e-training material for professionals conducting and using individual assessment, policy makers and academics will be prepared. These e-lessons will improve the existing knowledge about various models of individual assessment in the EU countries, important principles, and the process itself. Virtual training will help establish standards for ensuring the needs of suspected or accused children in criminal proceedings.
The project is funded by the European Commission under the Justice Program. Project duration: 2019 January 1 - 2020 December 31. Together with Law Institute of Lithuania, the project will be also implemented by the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences of the University of Zagreb (Croatia), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece), HFC Hope for Children Policy Center (Cyprus), IAYFJM International Association of Youth and Family Judges and Magistrates (Belgium) and Children's Rights Ombudsman Institution of the Republic of Lithuania.
